HISTORY
The museum of the Mayan House & the sustainable hotel was born from a profound process of understanding the place that was carried out for the creation of Aldea Maya Toktli Orígenes. During the process, we discovered that the mayan house was in danger of extinction because only the older generations of the community had learned to build the house at some point in their childhood. Do to this discovery we invited the “antigüos” (elders)
to participate in the construction of Aldea Maya Toktli Orígenes´ mayan houses, and they, in turn, brought their grandchildren to practice with them. The construction process quickly became a festival of knowledge among families. We now have shown to many people through out the globe the construction techniques of the Casa Maya (Maya house) spreading the knowledges so it never dies.
THE COLLECTION
The museum features seven beautiful Mayan houses built using ancient techniques developed by the Maya. The shapes of some
were determined by the native trees. We have a space designed for the bahareque and embarro technique workshop.
TOUR OF THE MUSEUM
Through the tour of the museum you will learn about the mayan solar, the elements of the Casa Maya, it´s techniques for construction, the physical and spiritual meaning, it´s conection with sustainability and to Aldea Maya Toktli Orígenes´ system. You will also learn about the sustainable
system of the hotel and the ecological solutions that were applied for reduce the ecological footprint of visitors and guests.
At the end of the tour you will experience a bajareque/embarro workshop, technique use for the construction of the walls of the Casa Maya.
THE BACKGROUND
The project was refined by several specialists in ecological solutions, polished with a design in systems that mimic nature during our founder’s Master in Socio-Environmental Projects, and with a global approach refined during her certification in Sustainable Business Strategies from Harvard Business School.
The project was incubated by InnovaUNAM, the incubator of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, considered the leading institution in Mexico. Once the project was launched, the State of Yucatán declared us a Thematic Village and awarded us the Yucatán Quality Distinction.
